There’s not a huge diet difference between a normal sized hamster and a dwarf hamster. However, there is one worth noting. This is the amount of sugar treats given to dwarf hamsters because they are predisposed to diabetes. A nutritious balanced diet includes proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fats and water.
Pellets: Pellets (hamster food) are recommended because it is made for hamsters. You can find hamster food at any local pet stores. Currently, I am feeding Fate and her pups “Carefresh Complete Food for Gerbils and Hamsters”.
Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: Giving fresh fruits and vegetables are good for your dwarf hamster’s diet because it provides essential vitamins and minerals. However, it should be given in moderation because too much may cause diarrhea. Personally, I love giving my hamsters carrots the most!
Here’s a list of suggested fruits and vegetables you can give your dwarf hamster:
apples (no seeds)
bananas
blueberries
broccoli
carrots
cauliflower
cucumber
dandelions greens
grapes
kale
peas
potato (cooked)
romaine lettuce
spinach
strawberries
sweet potato
squash
Sunflower Seeds: All types of hamsters love sunflower seeds; they are highly nutritious and contain 47-49% fat, which is a lot! This is why it should be served only in small amounts.
Never feed the following to your pet dwarf hamster:
apple seeds
raw beans
raw potatoes
almonds
citrus fruit
garlic
onions
rhubarb leaves or raw rhubarb
chocolate
any junk food
